VICTORY OVER THE FLESH THROUGHT THE ‘SPIRIT’

  • What does it mean to be Worldly?

Titus  2:12    Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

Ungodliness equals Worldliness = WORLDLY, a.

1. Secular; temporal; pertaining to this world or life, in contradistinction to the life to come; as worldly pleasures; worldly affairs; worldly estate; worldly honor; worldly lusts. Titus 2:12.

2. Devoted to this life and its enjoyments; bent on gain; as a worldly man; a worldly mind.

3. Human; common; belonging to the world; as worldly actions; worldly maxims.

UNGODLY, a.

1. Wicked; impious; neglecting the fear and worship of God, or violating his commands. 1 Peter 4:18.

2. Sinful; contrary to the divine commands; as ungodly deeds. Jude 4.

3. Polluted by wickedness; as an ungodly day.

  • What does it mean to be Spiritual?

SPIRITUAL, a.

1. Consisting of spirit; not material; incorporeal; as a spiritual substance or being. The soul of man is spiritual.

2. Mental; intellectual; as spiritual armor.

3. Not gross; refined from external things; not sensual; relative to mind only; as a spiritual and refined religion.

4. Not lay or temporal; relating to sacred things; ecclesiastical; as the spiritual functions of the clergy; the lords spiritual and temporal; a spiritual corporation.

5. Pertaining to spirit or to the affections; pure; holy.

Gods law is spiritual; it is a transcript of the divine nature, and extends its authority to the acts of the soul of man.

6. Pertaining to the renewed nature of man; as spiritual life.

7. Not fleshly; not material; as spiritual sacrifices. 1 Peter 2:5.

8. Pertaining to divine things; as spiritual songs. Ephesians 5:19.

Spiritual court, an ecclesiastical court; a court held by a bishop or other ecclesiastic.

GODLY, a. [god-like] Pious; reverencing God, and his character and laws.

1. Living in obedience to God’s commands, from a principle of love to him and reverence of his character and precepts; religious; righteous; as a godly person.

2. Pious; conformed to God’s law; as a godly life.

Romans  7:14          For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

1 Corinthians  2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

 2:13   Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

 2:14   But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

 2:15   But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

 2:16   For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

  3:1    And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, [even] as unto babes in Christ.

  • Spirituality in the Old Testament?

1 Corinthians  10:1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

 10:2   And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

 10:3   And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

 10:4   And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

 10:5   But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

 10:6   Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

  • How do we Develop Spirituality?

Galatians  6:1          Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

 6:2     Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

 6:3     For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

 6:4     But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

 6:5     For every man shall bear his own burden.

 6:6     Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

 6:7     Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

 6:8     For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Ephesians  5:17       Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is].

 5:18   And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

 5:19   Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Ephesians 6:12        For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

 6:13   Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

1 Peter  2:1  Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

 2:2     As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

 2:3     If so be ye have tasted that the Lord [is] gracious.

 2:4     To whom coming, [as unto] a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, [and] precious,

 2:5     Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

  • Are there such persons as Worldly Christians?

1 Corinthians  2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

  3:1    And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, [even] as unto babes in Christ.

1 Corinthians  3:2   I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able [to bear it], neither yet now are ye able.

 3:3     For ye are yet carnal: for whereas [there is] among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

 3:4     For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I [am] of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

  • Are there such persons as Spiritual Worldlings?

Matthew  8:10        When Jesus heard [it], he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Matthew  15:21      Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

 15:22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, [thou] son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

 15:23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

 15:25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

 15:26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast [it] to dogs.

 15:27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great [is] thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Romans  2:14          For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

 2:15   Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

2:16    In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Zechariah 13:6        And [one] shall say unto him, What [are] these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, [Those] with which I was wounded [in] the house of my friends.

  • How common is it in most Christian Churches today to have Worldly Christians amongst their membership?

Revelation  3:15     I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

 3:16   So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

 3:17   Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Matthew  7:22        Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

 7:23   And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Matthew  22:11      And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

 22:14 For many are called, but few [are] chosen.

  • Are we one of them?

1 Corinthians  11:28          But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup.

Psalm  51:1  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

 51:2   Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

  • What are the symptoms?

1 Corinthians  2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech [you] as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

1 John  2:15 Love not the world, neither the things [that are] in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

 2:16   For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

  • What are the symptoms of a Healthy Spiritual Christian standard in life?

1 Corinthians  2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

 2:13   Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Galatians  6:1          Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

 6:2     Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have [sufficient] to finish [it]?

 14:29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish [it], all that behold [it] begin to mock him,

 14:30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

  • How long should it take?

Ehesians  5:13         But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

 5:14   Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

 5:15   See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

 5:16   Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

 5:17   Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is].

Luke  12:16  And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

 12:17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

 12:18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, [and] be merry.

 12:20 But God said unto him, [Thou] fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

 18:4   And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

18:8    Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong [is] the Lord God who judgeth her.

 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Ezekiel  18:28          Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

 18:29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

 18:30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn [yourselves] from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

 18:31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

 18:32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn [yourselves], and live ye.

  • If we died tomorrow would we be assured of Eternity?

Ezekiel 18:26           When a righteous [man] turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

 18:27 Again, when the wicked [man] turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

 18:28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

  • Let us give our hearts to the Lord Today and be assured of Eternity!

2 Corinthians  6:2   (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.)

1 Corinthians 15:47 The first man [is] of the earth, earthy: the second man [is] the Lord from heaven.
15:48 As [is] the earthy, such [are] they also that are earthy: and as [is] the heavenly, such [are] they also that are heavenly.
15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
